Atrocities Overlooked
The callous and heartless nature of some people, particularly those who are in politics and/or in power is just mind boggling to me. Let’s begin with this example…
BUDAPEST, HUNGARY February 19, 2004. Armenian citizen Gurgen Margaryan, 26 years old, was hacked to death while asleep by Ramil Safarov, a Lieutenant of the Azerbaijani Army. Both were participants of an English language training course within the framework of the NATO-sponsored “Partnership for Peace” program held in Budapest, Hungary. The murder occurred at 5 o’clock in the morning, while the victim was asleep.
You can read more about the murder, the murderer’s disgusting confession, and news of the trial here.
I cannot understand the pure evil necessary to carry out such a heinous crime. I also can’t understand the lack of public outcry against this brutal murder by other countries, most especially those with officers present and participating in the same program and those in NATO in general. Internationally, there have been about three short pieces written about this murder, they don’t even qualify as articles. And the NATO nations themselves have not issued public statements against the actions committed.
This lack of action has prompted Azeri officials to issue threats to Armenians worldwide that as long as Karabagh is in Armenian hands, Armenians around the world should not sleep safely.
Yeah this is wonderful people. Wonderful world we live in. I just recently saw Hotel Rwanda as well. People always ask when you see a movie, “Was it good?” But I always have difficulty answering that question when its about a movie like this one. The movie was incredibly well made and the acting is top-notch, most especially by Don Cheadle. But the movie isn’t about something “good”. Its horrible and horrifying. It makes you terribly sad and ashamed to watch it. That said, I highly recommend you see it. It’s very moving and is one of the few movies released nowadays actually worth the time you spend to see it. It’s also based on a true story, and Cheadle’s character, Paul, is a real person.
What’s the point? What is the point of all this posturing that the western powers do denouncing hate crimes, intolerance, and genocides. They didn’t stop the genocide in Rwanda. They indirectly caused the Armenian one. And nobody sure as hell is doing enough to stop the one in Darfur either. Enough about sadness, hate, and heartlessness. I’ll be posting soon about some good news I’ve received.
