Armenian Alias

Friday, May 9th, 2003

Alias. So I’ve never watched the show but I know it was pretty popular for some time. For those of you who know about it the main male character on the show, Vaughn I think, is played by what seems to be an Armenian fellow by the name of Michael Vartan. He is the nephew of famous French singer Sylvie Vartan. Now with a name like Vartan you cannot deny the guy has at least some Armenian heritage hehe. Gotta love those Armenian names; they make it so easy to track one another down.

Speaking of prominent Armenians…

Dr. Vartan Gregorian was named this week to the jury evaluating entries in the international competition to design the World Trade Center Site Memorial. He is one of 13 judges from a variety of areas who will select a winning memorial design in the fall. Gregorian, the president of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, was previously president of Brown

University and the New York Public Library.

Giving Thanks

So Thanksgiving weekend was cool. I got a chance to see my fam, I hadnt seen them for like 3 months so that was nice of course. Then I got to see Eric, Nareg, and Arlet. Hadn’t seen them for at least that long too. You gotta love closing out the Burbank In N Out at 1:30 on a Friday night baby. That’s our second home right there haha.

I also got a chance to see Ararat. I’d like to go on and on about how great it was to see this movie but I can’t. I can’t because I just choke up when I think about it. It was so unbelievable to hear my native tongue being spoken on the big screen. So overwhelming to imagine that this film that peered into the Armenian psyche today would be seen by thousands of people around the world. Nothing is perfect but how can one complain about this movie? I can’t. In fact I have to see it again it was so good. I’m going to see it this weekend in SF and I encourage ANYbody who hasn’t seen it yet, whether you’re Armenian or not, to join me. It’s an intense movie you won’t forget about soon.

Ararat

Friday, November 22nd, 2002

Well if you don’t already know about the best movie that was released last weekend, here is your chance to find out about it. It’s called Ararat. Click here for the trailer. I will be seeing the film when I come back from Thanksgiving break. If you’re interested in seeing it, and I encourage you to because I hear its a really great movie, then let me know and we can go see it together. Currently its only showing in LA and NY but it will be opening in 10 other major cities the 27th of November. Even better, Miramax has announced that if it continues to sell out the next two weekends like it did this last weekend, then it will release the movie to 3,000 theaters and back it with a big ad campaign. I’m really excited and I can’t wait to see this movie.

Just a Crush

Damn so I kind of forgot about this thing. Things are well in Berkeley-land for the most part. I’ve been keepin’ busy as usual. I’m going to go watch our football team crush UCLA now (I wish).

If any of you have been watching NBC primetime lately you must have noticed that Armenians have gotten a few mentions lately, usually completely random. We were on the season-opener for Friends, an Armenian family was in the hospital and supposedly watched Ross play with himself in his sleep. If you or anyone you know hears more random references to Armenians on TV this season, please, call your local authorities or just tell me instead, I’m curious about this new trend.

Zankou

So the votes are in and the number one place to get good food for cheap according to the people of LA is…none other than In N Out. And of course coming in a close second is world renowned Zankou Chicken. Love that roasted Armenian chicken. Peep the list here.

Coming Right Up

Tuesday, October 1st, 2002

Ararat the movie is soon to be released. Mark your calendars for November 15th for everyone in LA and NY, available in other cities soon thereafter.

Ararat is a movie directed and written by Atom Egoyan which is about the search for truth and denial of it. It is based around the Armenian genocide. I can’t wait to see this movie…I will post my thoughts as soon as I see it.

Just Great

Want to hear something pathetic? At it’s current growth rates, Armenia’s Gross Domestic Product will reach its levels of 1991 in 2005. Thanks Soviet Union, thanks a bunch. Always something putting us back and then we got to play catch up, its getting pretty annoying, no?
